Interesting fact: conventional urban stormwater systems collect runoff (a majority of which comes from paved surfaces such as streets, sidewalks, etc.) and convey it through a series of underground pipes and culverts into streams, lakes, and wetlands. Drawbacks to this method include increased flooding downstream, increased stream velocities, higher erosion rates, and reduced water quality. Another issue is sediment buildup in the system, which must be cleaned out at an additional cost to the city and is especially costly in New Orleans due to the massive pumping infrastructure.
If you’re looking for a fun event, in addition to making you’re plans to attend WEFTEC this fall, remember to come out to the Fourth of July spectacular. You’ll see two barges shoot off a dazzling array of sparkling lights along with cosmic sounds on the New Orleans river front. Also, Perma-Liner Industries is planning a Trenchless Tour on July 27th in the New England area. We’ll be posting more information on this must see event…stay tuned!
